Our club read 'The Road' and everyone keeps saying the man dies at the end
We read it last month in my group in Austin, and three people said the ending clearly shows the father passing away. But the text never says that. It says 'he slept' and then the boy meets the new family. I checked the last five pages twice. This matters because it changes the whole point about hope. Has your group argued about this ending?

Wait, what? I just read it last week and I totally disagree. The book says "he slept" and then cuts to the boy finding the new family. It never says he died. To me, that's the whole point, like @nancy351 might get, it's left open. If he was dead, the boy would have to deal with the body right there. The hope comes from the boy moving on while maybe the dad finally gets some real rest. Saying he for sure dies makes it too simple.
