Botany lover meetup last weekend had way more soil nerds than plant people

I showed up at the greenhouse in Portland expecting seed swaps and propagation talk, but most folks just wanted to argue about loam vs clay pH levels for 3 hours, so has anyone else found the social side of this hobby gets overshadowed by technical deep dives?

Arguing about loam vs clay pH for 3 hours" sounds like a great way to scare off anyone who just wants to swap a cutting. Nothing says "welcome to the hobby" like a lecture on soil composition before you've even watered your first pothos. I guess some folks love plants more on paper than in person.

My buddy Tim went to his first plant swap last month. He brought a perfectly nice monstera cutting and got cornered by someone explaining why his tap water was basically poison. He left after 15 minutes and hasn't touched a plant since.
