Just finished a chimney rebuild where we switched from a standard mix to a high-lime mortar
The old mortar joints from 15 years ago were crumbling, but the new ones we put in last week look rock solid already. The mason who taught me said the extra lime makes it more flexible and breathable, which is key for old brick. Has anyone else seen a big difference with lime-rich mixes on repair jobs?

Oh man, I don't know about all that "rock solid" talk already after just a week. Lime mortar takes time to cure properly, sometimes months, so saying it's perfect that fast seems like jumping the gun to me. I've seen too many jobs where guys brag about their mix right away, then a year later you've got hairline cracks showing up because they didn't let it breathe right. The old crumbling joints from 15 years back might just be from bad brick or water getting trapped, not the lime itself. Seems like a lot of folks get caught up in the hype without waiting to see how it really holds up over a few seasons.
