My rice cooker died mid-dinner rush and I had to rethink everything

Last Tuesday the cheap rice cooker I got for $12 at a thrift store in Tulsa just stopped steaming right when I was feeding a family of four, so I tossed the soggy batch and made a skillet version with chicken broth and it actually saved the meal, has anyone else had a backup plan save them when their budget appliance quit?

Fixing dinner with a random skillet reminds me how our best saves come from the stuff we almost threw out.
