Serious question, is it worth buying bulk rice when it goes bad after 6 months?
I bought a 25 pound bag of jasmine rice from a warehouse store back in January because everyone online says buying bulk saves money. Well I opened it last week to make dinner and found little bugs crawling around inside. I checked the bag and it said best by June but I stored it in a dry cupboard in my apartment in Phoenix. Now I'm trying to figure out if I should just stick to smaller 5 pound bags that cost more per pound but at least I use them up fast. My neighbor says I should have put it in the freezer for a few days first to kill any eggs. What do you all do for rice storage that actually works without spending extra on fancy containers?

Laugh at myself here - I did the exact same thing with a 20 pound bag of basmati last year. Found the bugs after about four months and felt like a fool. What worked for me was splitting the bag into old pickle jars and mason jars I had lying around, then tossing in a couple of those food-grade oxygen absorbers I bought for like eight bucks online. The jars sit in my pantry now and I haven't had a single critter problem since. Your neighbor's right about the freezer trick too - I do that for any new bag before it goes into jars, just a few days then out, and my freezer never smelled like anything.

My sister tried the freezer trick on a 50 pound bag and her whole freezer smelled like rice for three months.
