Talked to my grandma about her depression era cooking

She told me she used to stretch one chicken into 4 meals by using every single part including the feet for broth. Made me realize how much meat I just throw in the freezer and forget about. Anyone else got old family tricks for making cheap ingredients go way further?

Read somewhere that bone broth was basically a depression era staple because people wasted nothing.

And that simmered collagen is the only thing that kept my grandmother's joints from locking up during the cold winters.

Oh man, I actually see it a bit different. Bone broth was more of a fancy health food thing back then, not really a poverty staple. People saved bones for soups and stocks sure, but the whole 'sipping bone broth for collagen' thing is pretty modern from what I've read. I mean, my grandma wouldve looked at you funny if you called her chicken stock 'bone broth.'
