Going against the grain, my travel insurance actually saved my trip

Most folks say it's a scam for cheap trips, but when my connecting flight was canceled, they put me up in a hotel. Felt pretty smart for spending that extra twenty bucks.

How often do we dismiss small expenses that actually buy peace of mind? That insurance story is a perfect example of a cheap safeguard stopping a minor problem from blowing up. We skip stuff like that all the time, then get mad when the predictable bad thing happens.

My friend skipped the $30 roadside assistance add-on last year. @ryanpatel, he blew two tires on a back road and the tow alone cost him over $400. That cheap fee is just buying a backup plan for your future self. We're really bad at picturing ourselves stuck.

Totally get that. It's like buying a decent phone case or keeping a spare charger in your bag. That small cost feels pointless until you drop your phone or your battery dies at the worst time. We gamble on nothing going wrong to save a few bucks, then freak out over the huge hassle when it does. Why do we always assume we'll be the lucky exception?
