That guy at the Salt Lake City hostel changed my mind about hostels

I always thought hostels were for 20-year-olds and backpackers with more guts than cash. But last month I was stuck in SLC with a $50 a night hotel budget and nothing was working. A dude at the front desk of this hostel told me he's been living in hostels for 6 months straight to save for a van build, said he pays $30 a night. It hit me that if you pick the right ones with private rooms and kitchen access, it's basically a cheap apartment. Has anyone else found a hostel that worked for more than just a quick sleep?

It's fine for some people but those shared kitchens and common areas get old fast when you're not just passing through for a night or two. Private rooms at hostels still mean thin walls and shared bathrooms with strangers which isn't everyone's idea of a good setup.

Oh man, I've actually found the opposite works better for longer stays. In my experience hostel common areas are way easier to deal with than Airbnb neighbors who complain about you existing in their building.
