My grocery budget cracked when I stopped buying pre-cut produce

For like 6 months in Columbus I kept wondering why my weekly food bill hit $180 no matter how careful I was. Then I added up the cost per pound on those plastic trays of diced onions and sliced mushrooms, it was nearly triple the whole veggie price. I started spending 10 minutes Sunday evening chopping everything myself and my receipt dropped to about $140, plus the stuff lasts longer in the fridge. Anyone else notice this hiding in their own checkout line, or is it just me?

My 4 year old actually tried to eat a raw mushroom from the tray once because it looked like a candy. He bit into it and cried for 20 minutes. Now I chop them myself mostly because the pre-cut ones release this slimy juice after two days that smells like old gym socks. Even the bulk bin onions at Kroger beat the tray price, but you gotta catch the manager markdowns around 7pm on Tuesday nights. That's when they slash the bruised peppers and half the price of the pre-made guac too.
