Overheard a guy at Lowe's saying he saves $40 a month by washing ziploc bags

I was in the checkout line yesterday and this older guy was telling the cashier he's been reusing ziploc bags for like 5 years now. Said he runs them through the dishwasher on the top rack and they last forever. I've been throwing them out my whole life (lol). Did the math and yeah if I use maybe 20 bags a week at 50 cents a box, that adds up quick. Has anyone else tried this without getting weird looks from their family?

Nah, I gotta disagree on this one. Even if you save forty bucks a month, running those bags through the dishwasher uses extra water, soap, and electricity that probably eats into those savings pretty quick. Plus the time and hassle of cleaning them just doesn't seem worth it for something meant to be thrown out.

Wait, you’re seriously washing ziploc bags in the dishwasher? I had to read that twice to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. That sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen, like melted plastic all over your heating element. I can just see the baggies flying off the top rack and sticking to everything. No way that’s worth the risk for a few cents, even if you’re trying to be eco-friendly or save a couple bucks.
