That conversation with my uncle about his cast iron pan
I was at a family barbecue last weekend and my uncle handed me his cast iron pan that he's used for 30 years. He said 'I don't season it, I just cook bacon and wipe it clean.' It hit different because I've been babying mine with flaxseed oil and special scrubbing, but his pan looked way better than mine. Has anyone else found that simple use beats all the fancy care routines?

Did your uncle ever mention if he uses soap on it?

Is your uncle the kind of guy who uses a full bar of soap on his cast iron? Ive heard of people using salt or chainmail but soap is a whole different level of dirty, @jordan330. My uncle is a purist about this stuff and he would probably faint if he saw someone lathering up a seasoned skillet. He always says soap strips the seasoning and leaves a weird taste. To each their own I guess, but I really hope he rinses it well afterwards.
