TIL a $3 silicone baking mat outlasted 4 expensive non-stick pans I bought

I was replacing my frying pan every 8 months because the coating always peeled off. Then my neighbor Linda told me to just use a silicone mat on a cheap stainless pan instead of buying those fancy non-stick ones. I picked one up at the grocery store for $3 and it's been going strong for over a year now with zero scratches. Has anyone else tried this shortcut or found a better workaround for non-stick?

Honestly, that "ignore the marketing hype" tip is solid, I just spray a little oil on the mat and it works perfect.

Catch yourself buying into that same trap all the time with kitchen stuff and even my tools. People keep chasing fancy brand names when the simplest solution works just as good or better. That whole system is designed to make you throw money away every year instead of buying something that lasts. A basic stainless pan plus a silicone liner is practically indestructible compared to those coatings that flake off and get in your food anyway. Sometimes the REAL pro move is just ignoring the marketing hype and using what actually does the job.
