Waterproof boots were my blind spot for 15 years

I have worn the same brand of work boots for over a decade and always bought the waterproof version, figuring more is better. Last winter in Minneapolis, after a full day shoveling, my feet were soaked and freezing, and I blamed the boots themselves. It turned out the issue was that I never let them dry out properly between wears, so the inner liner broke down and lost its seal. I finally switched to two pairs of non-waterproof leather boots and rotate them daily, and my feet stay drier now than they ever did with the fancy membrane. Has anyone else found that rotating two cheaper pairs beats one expensive waterproof pair for everyday use?

Man, that's a rough way to learn that lesson.
