Why nobody talks about choosing between SSDI and SDI when you get hurt

I had to pick between applying for SDI through EDD or waiting for my SSDI hearing (which could take 18 months), and I went with SDI first since I had the work credits from my real estate gig here in Sacramento. It processed in like 6 weeks but then got cut off way sooner than I thought it would, has anyone else dealt with that surprise? (the 52-week cap caught me off guard)

Did you try applying for an extension or appealing the cutoff? I managed to get mine extended a few extra weeks by submitting updated medical paperwork from my doctor.

Right, because nobody tells you about the 52-week cap until it's already gone and you're staring at an empty bank account lol. I picked SDI too thinking it was the fast and easy path and then got that lovely surprise letter like "surprise, you're on your own now!" The whole system is just designed to make sure you're really committed to being broke I guess.
