Got caught in a surprise downpour on the Olympic Peninsula last month and my old rain jacket totally failed

I was hiking near Forks, Washington, and a storm rolled in that wasn't in the forecast. My 5-year-old rain jacket, which I'd always trusted, just soaked through in under 20 minutes. I was wet and cold for hours. When I got home, I checked the tag and realized the waterproof coating had worn off completely. I'm now looking for a new, reliable shell that can handle real rain. Anyone have a favorite rain jacket that's actually held up for more than a few seasons?

Ugh, my jacket's a glorified sweater too.

Remember that feeling when the wind picks up and you hear that jacket fabric rustle like a cheap plastic bag? That's the sound of false promises. Mine wets out in a light mist, just beads up for a minute before giving up completely. You start wondering if you'd be warmer just wearing three regular sweaters instead.

Sounds like your jacket decided to retire right in the middle of the job. Classic gear move, letting you down the one time you actually need it to work. That's the worst kind of surprise on a hike, trading views for a cold, wet shirt. Been there, and it really makes you question all your past life choices. Hope you find a real tank of a shell next time.
