I used a car sunshade as a makeshift ground tarp during a surprise downpour in the Rockies
My actual tarp was buried deep in my pack, so I grabbed the reflective shield from my windshield and it kept my sleeping area totally dry for two hours. Has anyone else MacGyvered a piece of non-camping gear into something useful out there?

That sunshade trick is pretty clever. Once had a tent pole snap on a windy night in Utah, and the only thing that kept the rainfly up was a green garden stake meant for tomato plants. It was in the truck bed from a weekend project. Looked ridiculous, but it held until morning.

Read somewhere that bamboo skewers work too for splinting tent poles.

Tell me more about that garden stake. Was it just the right length, or did you have to snap it to fit the broken pole section?
