PSA: That career fair in Columbus felt like a trap, check the fine print

I drove 2 hours to the big career expo at the convention center last Tuesday and half the booths were just recruiters collecting resumes for 'future roles' that don't exist yet. One guy literally told me, "We're building a pipeline, not hiring this quarter," which sounds great until you realize they just want your info for their database. I counted 14 companies that had zero job postings online when I checked their sites that night. The real jobs were all in the back corner, smaller booths, and those folks actually talked about salary ranges and start dates. My advice is to email the event organizer first and ask for the list of employers with open requisitions, not just names on a banner. Has anyone else burned a day off work for one of these and walked out with nothing but spam emails?
