My dad always said to never use a utility knife for cutting carpet pad, but I finally tried his old hook blade method on a job in Tempe

My uncle in Mesa swore by that same hook blade trick for vinyl flooring. It's funny how the old ways stick around for a reason. I see it with my grandpa's woodworking jigs, stuff you can't buy at the store. People figure out a method that just works and it gets passed down like a secret handshake.

Wait, your uncle did vinyl flooring in Mesa? That desert heat must make the material act totally different. I can't imagine trying to get a clean cut when it's 110 degrees outside. Did he have any tricks for keeping the vinyl from getting too soft?

Yeah, @phoenix_singh, that heat is no joke for vinyl. My uncle always said you had to work super early in the morning before the sun really got going. He'd store the planks in the coolest spot he could find, like a garage, right up until he needed them.
