PSA: That 'chef grade' knife sharpening service in the mall is a total scam

I dropped off my favorite 8-inch chef's knife at a kiosk in the Grandview Mall last month. The guy swore he could get it 'razor sharp' with his 'pro equipment' for $40. Got it back and the edge was completely uneven, felt like they just ran it through a cheap pull-through sharpener. I had to spend another $75 with a real pro to fix the messed-up bevel. That's $115 total for something I could have done right the first time. The whole thing wasted a whole afternoon and a chunk of my week's petty cash. Seriously, just save your money and learn to use a whetstone or find a reputable local guy. Has anyone else gotten burned by one of these mall setups? What's your go-to sharpening method now?
