Watching line cooks burn garlic in the pan before anything else goes in

I keep seeing new cooks at my place in Seattle add minced garlic to a hot, empty pan. It turns bitter and brown in about 15 seconds. They do it because they saw it on a video, but they don't add oil or other ingredients first to control the heat. Now I make them start with onions or oil, then add garlic later. Has anyone else found a good way to teach this without sounding like you're just nagging?

Is it really that big of a deal, though?

My buddy tried to cheap out on a new battery for his phone. Thought it was no big deal. Two weeks later the thing puffed up like a pillow and fried his whole phone board. Cost him way more than just buying a good part in the first place.

Can you show them how it tastes when it's burnt?
