TIL the guy at the West Side Market fruit stand can read you like a book
I was grabbing some apples last Saturday at the market, trying to pretend I knew what I was doing. This older vendor, name tag said Lou, just laughed and said 'You're picking the pretty ones again, huh? Those are mealy as heck.' He pointed me to a bin of gnarly lookin' honeycrisps that were half the price of the fancy ones too. Has anyone else had a market worker call them out on their bad produce habits?

Pretty ones are mealy" - that's basically my life motto now, since I clearly have zero instincts for picking good fruit. Guess I'm the human equivalent of a bruised banana?

Drive your thumb nail into the stem end, Claire. If it gives easy and smells sweet, you're good. That little trick saved me from eating cardboard pears for years.
