Vent: the guy at the Detroit-Shoreway laundromat told me to stop babying my tomatoes
Was folding clothes at the laundromat on West 65th last Saturday and this older guy named Walt noticed my phone lock screen, which is a picture of my tomato plants looking sad. He asked what I was doing with them and I said I water them every single day. He laughed and told me I was drowning them, that tomatoes want deep soaks twice a week, not a daily sprinkle, and that his dad grew them on Lorain Ave for 30 years that way. I switched to twice a week about 10 days ago and two of the plants already have new flowers. Anyone on the west side had luck with a watering schedule like that in this clay soil?
Walt is right about the deep soaks, but twice a week is way too much for clay soil, that stuff holds water like a sponge and my Lorain County tomatoes rot if I water more than once every 7 to 10 days.
