Watched a raccoon open my compost bin last Tuesday like he owned the place
I live over by Edgewater Park, and this chunky raccoon strolled up to my backyard bin around 9 PM. He went straight for the latch I thought was raccoon-proof, popped it in about 30 seconds, and pulled out half an avocado. My neighbor Dave saw it from his porch and just laughed, said he's been dealing with the same bandit for months. Any tips for keeping these little Houdinis out of your compost without spending a fortune?

Oh, I got a good chuckle out of "little Houdinis" because that's exactly what they are. I tried a bungee cord on my bin last spring and watched a fat one slip it off like he was picking a lock on a cartoon show. The only thing that worked for me was drilling a hole through the lid and the handle and putting a small carabiner clip through it. It takes me an extra few seconds each time I open it, but that raccoon just sits on my fence now and glares at me like I ruined his whole meal plan.
