I used to think my old car was fine because it still ran

For years I kept driving my 2003 sedan, telling myself it was better than making a new one. Then my friend pointed out I was getting about 18 miles per gallon and driving over 12,000 miles a year for my job. I did the math on the gas and repair costs versus a newer used hybrid, and I was wrong the whole time. Has anyone else held onto an old vehicle way too long before switching?

Wait, 18 mpg in a sedan?

My old truck was the same way. I finally ran the numbers and the constant repairs plus the bad gas mileage were costing me more each month than a newer car payment would have been. It's easy to ignore when you're not adding it all up.

People forget to factor in downtime and stress. A broken truck means missing work or paying for a rental, which adds up fast. The math is brutal once you actually do it.
