Met an old timer at a shop in Tulsa who changed how I set my tool offsets

I was replacing a worn end mill on a Haas VF-2 at a job shop in Tulsa last winter. This guy in his 60s walks over and says 'you're zeroing that wrong, kid.' He showed me his trick of touching off with the tool itself instead of a gauge block every time. Now I save about 30 seconds per tool change and my parts come out more consistent. Has anyone else picked up a weird tip from a random operator that actually works?

An old timer showed me the same trick on a Bridgeport back in 2002.
