Pulled the insert on a burned up 4140 shaft after 2 attempts, .020 depth of cut was the magic number
Was chattering like crazy on a bearing journal until I dropped from .035 to .020 and bumped the rpm up to 750, and it cut smooth as butter on the third try. Anyone else got a go-to depth of cut for hard stuff that just works every time?
Man, rpm is probably what actually fixed it, not just the depth of cut. 750 is still slow for 4140, but if you were running way under that before, yeah, that would chatter like hell. Bumping speed usually kills chatter more than backing off the cut does.
Ran into the same thing on my old South Bend, was fighting chatter on some 4140 at like 400 rpm and kept cranking the depth down thinking that was it. Turned out the insert was rubbing more than cutting at that speed, bumped it to 900 and the chatter just went away. Depth still matters but yeah once you're in the right speed range for the material the whole thing settles down. What insert are you running? That makes a difference too on 4140.
