My espresso machine gauge went haywire mid-pull yesterday and I'm still confused

Was pulling a shot for my neighbor around 6pm when the pressure gauge on my Gaggia Classic jumped to 15 bars out of nowhere... I shut it down quick but the shot was a total mess. I took the machine apart and the OPV looked fine, no clogs in the group head. Has anyone else had a gauge fail like this on an older machine, and was it the gauge itself or something deeper?

15 bars is way past the OPV relief setting on a Gaggia Classic, mine was set to 12 from the factory. Probably just the gauge itself crapped out but I'd check the OPV spring anyway to be safe.

Yeah the gauge failing is the most common issue with these machines. But since you already have it open I'd just swap the spring while you're in there, takes two minutes and rules out any pressure problems.

That "15 bars out of nowhere" sounds like the gauge is toast, just swap it out.
