I think the 90s X-Men cartoon actually got worse after season 2
Everyone always says the animated series peaked later but I rewatched it last month and season 1 has way more focus on the actual team dynamics. After they switched voice directors around season 3 the pacing got all jumpy and they kept cramming in too many guest characters. I know people love the Phoenix Saga episodes but the animation quality took a hit around that time too. Am I the only one who thinks the simpler early episodes hold up better?

Gently disagree about the voice director switch. The original voice director left after season 2, but the pacing issues you're noticing actually started in season 3 because they got a new animation studio, not a new voice director. The voice cast stayed the same through the whole run, just different recording setups. Your point about guest characters is totally fair though, they went overboard with that.

Nailed it @blairj55, I can barely keep track of my own plumbing crew let alone animation studios lol.

Did you check if the animation studio change also messed with the music? I noticed the soundtrack got way less moody around that time too. For me, the early episodes worked because they kept the team small and had more quiet character beats between the action. The simpler stories let the voice actors actually act instead of just yelling exposition at each other. I still watch season 1 when I want comfort food TV.
