Old vs new drysuit valves - I just hit 500 dives with my old metal ones and still haven't had a leak, but my buddy's plastic ones failed at 47 dives, so which do you really trust?

My metal valves have been bulletproof through 500 commercial dives in Norfolk harbor, but my buddy's plastic ones cracked on a routine pipeline inspection, so are we overthinking gear upgrades or should everyone stick with what's proven?

...and that's exactly what happened to this guy I know from the dive shop, he had the fancy plastic inflator valve and it just snapped clean off doing a simple pre-dive check. He switched back to the old metal ones and hasn't touched his gear bag since.

yeah that sucks man. i mean you buy this gear thinking it's the latest and greatest and then it just gives out like that. plastic has no business being on something that keeps you alive underwater. i remember when my old buddy had a similar thing happen with his first stage, the plastic yoke knob just crumbled in his hand. scared the hell out of him. he went straight back to his old school metal gear and never looked back. some things just don't need to be reinvented you know.
