Walked into a new bakery downtown and their hood system was screaming
Stopped at Rise & Crumb on 3rd Street last Tuesday to grab a sandwich and heard this high pitched whine coming from their kitchen. Asked the owner about it, turns out their exhaust fan bearings are shot and they've just been dealing with it for 3 weeks. Has anyone else run into kitchen equipment noise issues that customers can actually hear out front?

Three weeks is way too long to let a bad bearing ride like that. I used to think a noisy fan was just an annoyance that didn't matter much, but then I had a customer complain about the same thing at my own shop. Turns out a failing bearing can seize up completely and take the motor with it, which costs way more than swapping the bearing early. That high pitched scream is basically metal grinding on metal, and it won't fix itself. If they ignore it, they're looking at a full hood replacement instead of a cheap part swap. Tell the owner to call a commercial kitchen repair guy today.

Funny you mention that, @linda_wood is totally right. My buddy runs a sandwich place two blocks from here, and he had the same issue last summer. He kept putting off fixing the whine because he thought it was just a minor annoyance, you know? Then one busy Saturday, the fan just locked up completely mid-service. The kitchen filled with smoke so fast they had to shut down for three hours and refund half the lunch crowd. The repair guy told him the motor was fried and the whole hood needed rewiring (which was way more expensive than just replacing a $40 bearing). He still brings it up whenever someone asks about kitchen maintenance nightmares. So yeah, I'd tell that owner not to gamble on waiting any longer.
