Showerthought: My sister said helping online is just as real as helping in person
I was talking to my sister in Omaha last weekend. She volunteers at a food bank. I told her I mostly just answer questions in forums like this. She said, 'If someone figures out how to fix their sink because of a post you wrote, that's a real thing. You saved them a $200 plumber call.' That hit different. I always thought community help meant showing up somewhere with tools. But she's right. A clear answer at 2 AM when you're stuck is huge. It made me rethink what 'community' even means now. Is giving digital advice as valid as hands-on help? What do you guys think counts more?

Totally see this with my neighbor who fixes old computers for free online. His advice keeps people connected just like handing out a meal.

Isn't it wild how much help a little tech skill can be? That free advice saves people from feeling totally stuck and alone. It's a real lifeline in a digital world.

That "keeps people connected" line got me. Reminds me of this guy at my local library who just sits there every Tuesday helping older folks with their phones. He doesn't fix them, just shows them how to video call their grandkids. It's the same idea, just stopping someone from feeling shut out. That quiet help is everywhere if you look for it.
