That roofing guy told me to use galvanized nails instead of stainless, big mistake

I listened to some old timer at the hardware store saying galvanized was fine for coastal areas. Six months later my new shed roof has rust streaks running down every nail. Anyone else had a pro give them bad advice that cost them real money?

That rust showed up way faster than I would have guessed, that really sucks. I had a contractor tell me cheap exterior caulk would be fine for my deck, and two winters later the gaps were full of moss and water damage. Spent a whole weekend tearing it all out and redoing it with the good stuff, probably double the money I would have spent originally. Hard lesson to learn, especially when you think you're getting solid advice from someone who does this for a living.

Right? That "buy cheap, buy twice" thing is real, especially with contractors who don't have to live with the results. The moss and water damage part really gets me because that's exactly what happened to my neighbor's fence when they used the wrong screws. It's like the pros forget that the elements don't care about your budget, they'll just find the weak spot every single time.
