Rant: a colorist in Denver told me box dye builds up on the hair shaft and I finally saw it under a microscope
She pulled up a slide of a client who had used the same $9 box color for 4 years, and the cuticle was caked in layers. Anyone else here keep a cheap scope around for client consults, or is that overkill?

Man, come on, a microscope at the chair is straight up overkill and you know it. Box dye buildup is real, sure, but so is the buildup from a lot of salon lines if someone slaps it on root to tip every time, and nobody's dragging a scope out for that. That slide probably showed four years of overlapping applications, not some special evil in cheap dye, because any color stacked like that will cake the cuticle, expensive or not. You can feel the difference with your hands and see it in how the hair takes new color, so the scope is just theater for the client. And here's the thing, most people using $9 box color are doing it because that's what they can afford, so scaring them with a slide feels less like education and more like a sales pitch. Save the microscope for the lab, do a proper strand test and a good consult, and you'll get the same answer without making anyone feel bad about their budget.
