That balayage class in Austin rewired how I section hair

I used to split everything into four quadrants like they taught in school, but after 3 hours of watching that instructor work with a diagonal part system, I tried it on my next client and the blend took half the time, so has anyone else ditched the old grid method for something that feels backwards at first?

That diagonal part system threw me off too when my coworker showed it to me a few years ago. I sat there for two days hating how wrong it felt, then I did a test head on a mannequin and it just clicked. The trick for me was forgetting about perfect symmetry and focusing on where the hair actually falls naturally. Now I use it for most of my color work, especially when someone has a cowlick or weird growth pattern. It takes some getting used to, but once your hands learn it, you won't want to go back.
