Boom angle sensor went haywire on a tower crane Tuesday...

Was picking a 4-ton HVAC unit at a job outside Dallas and the angle reading jumped from 45 to 12 degrees out of nowhere. Ground guy called it on the radio and I had to set the load down slow and climb up to check the sensor bracket myself. You guys replace these things or just reset them and hope for the best?

Buddy of mine on a site in Houston had the EXACT same thing happen. He told me the sensor bracket got loose from all the vibration and the whole thing just swung out of whack. He climbed up there, found a bolt had backed out half an inch, tightened it back down with a ratchet, and it read perfectly fine for the rest of the week. His boss still made him swap it out the next Monday though, said it wasn't worth the risk.

You ever get that feeling when you fix something real quick and the boss still makes you tear it apart anyway? Reminds me of my old neighbor who had a pickup with a loose tail light. Tightened it in 2 seconds flat, worked fine for months, but his mechanic buddy guilted him into replacing the whole housing unit because "you never know what else got rattled loose." Guy spent 40 bucks and an afternoon cursing in his driveway for nothing. Sometimes folks get so stuck on the procedure they forget the fix was already good.
