Can we talk about those new wireless load indicators? I thought they were just a gimmick until we had to lift a 12-ton generator in a tight Philly alley last month.

That 12-ton generator test still doesn't convince me they're worth the extra cost.

Funny you mention that test, because honestly I think we get too hung up on single numbers like that. @hall.nora touched on something real about that sick feeling in your stomach - its not about whether the gear can handle 12 tons, its about how much margin you have when something unexpected happens. Like when you're swinging a load near a window or over a finished floor, a few hundred pounds of buffer can be the difference between a clean job and a disaster. Plus those sensors catch subtle degradation over time that a static test never shows, which saves you from surprises down the road.

Funny you mention that Philly alley job, that sounds like a nightmare. I get being skeptical about new gear, really do. But sometimes you just need that extra peace of mind when you're working in tight spots. We had a similar situation last fall with a transformer in a narrow parking garage. The load cell gave us the green light right when I was starting to doubt my own rigging. It's not about the cost, it's about avoiding that sick feeling in your stomach when you're not sure. So I'm with you, sometimes the tech actually pulls through when you need it most.
