My friend's email got hacked last Tuesday and they sent a fake invoice to everyone

It was a bad week because they used a simple password they had for years. Has anyone else had to help someone clean up after their account got taken over?

My cousin's Instagram got hit last year. First thing I did was help her run a virus scan on her laptop, which found some old malware. Then we went through every account she had and turned on two-factor authentication, starting with her email. It took a whole afternoon but nothing else got hacked after that.

Wow, that's actually a really smart way to handle it. I used to just tell people to change their password and call it a day, but your story shows that's not enough. Going through every single account and setting up two-factor is a pain, but it clearly works. I guess you really have to treat it like a full cleanup job, not just a quick fix.

Honestly, is all that really needed for most people? It sounds like overkill. If you change your main email password and maybe your social media, you're probably fine. Most folks aren't high-value targets. Spending a whole afternoon on it seems like a lot of stress for a small chance of something happening.
