Looking back on a pricey networking event at the Ren Cen
I dropped $500 on a big ticket conference a while back, thinking it was the key to meeting the right people. The panels were generic and the 'networking' was just a crowded room where everyone was trying to sell. Has anyone found a smaller, more focused group that actually connects people in Detroit?

Been there, felt that pain. Is it just me or do half those events feel like a pyramid scheme for business cards? I found a decent monthly meetup for tech folks in Corktown, way less salesy and more about actual problems.

Totally get the pyramid scheme for business cards thing. I started asking people what they're stuck on right now instead of what they do. It cuts through the sales talk fast. If someone just hands me a card, I'll say "cool, tell me about a real problem you solved this week." Filters out the noise and you find the people actually building stuff.
