Best day on the job vs worst day - which stands out more for you?

Last Tuesday I had a 1999 Cummins roll in with a stuck injector that I got loose in under 20 minutes, felt like a hero. But two days before that I spent 6 hours chasing a ghost crank no-start on a 6.0 Powerstroke only to find a chafed wire under the harness. Which kind of day leaves a bigger mark on your memory, the easy win or the nightmare?

Used to think the easy wins were the ones that stuck with me but that 6 hour nightmare you described changed my mind completely. The victories feel good for an hour or two but those frustrating jobs stay with you for days. You replay every step in your head wondering what you missed and that chafed wire story is exactly the kind of thing that keeps a guy up at night. Plus the hard ones teach you more than the easy ones ever will. Now I remember both kinds but the bad days have way more detail in my memory. Those nightmare jobs make you a better mechanic in the long run even if they suck while you are in them.

Honestly I used to think the opposite too. I figured the quick fixes and easy wins were the ones worth remembering because they made you look good. But you nailed it. That one job where I spent four hours tracking down a short in a control panel still haunts me. I can picture every wire I pulled and every test light I used. The easy ones just blur together now but that nightmare is burned into my brain forever.

Ngl I just started keeping a notebook of every fix. Helps me sleep better knowing I wrote it down.
