I used to think fancy injector testers were just a gimmick

For like 3 years I just did the old trick of listening for a knock and pulling lines one at a time to find a bad injector. Thought spending $400 on a pop tester was a waste for a small shop like mine. Then I had a 6.0 Powerstroke that would misfire cold but ran fine warm and I couldn't pin it down no matter what. Borrowed a buddy's tester at his shop in Austin and found one injector was spraying uneven at low pressure. Replaced just that one and it fixed it. Anyone else ever get humbled by a tool they swore they'd never buy?

I mean, I get where you're coming from but I kinda see it the other way. That old method of listening and pulling lines works for the simple stuff but sometimes you just get lucky and find it. A pop tester is only as good as the guy using it too. I've seen guys spend all day testing injectors that were fine and miss the real problem like a wiring issue or a bad harness. Not saying it's useless, just that you can usually get by without dropping that kind of cash if you know the truck well. Plus for a small shop, $400 could go toward a bunch of other tools or parts you actually need more often. But if you've got the cash and it saves you once a year, maybe it's worth it to you.

Yeah but a good pop tester pays for itself fast.
