Paying $40 for drawer slides finally made me stop jerry-rigging my desk

I spent two years using those cheap plastic glides and a layer of wax on my keyboard tray. It worked okay for a while but always felt sticky. Last month I got tired of it and bought proper ball bearing drawer slides at the hardware store. The smooth action feels so much better and it took about 20 minutes to swap out. The old setup was annoying me every single day and I never realized how much friction was in my way. Has anyone else upgraded something small that made a big difference in daily use?

Those ball bearing ones do feel way smoother, but did you have to drill new holes?

and honestly, @noah_webb, it took way less time than I thought it would. My old keyboard tray had the same cheap plastic glides, and the holes lined up perfect with the new slides, no drilling needed. I did have to shave a little bit off the back of the tray with a file because it was rubbing, but that was like five minutes. The smooth slide is honestly the best part, it just glides now instead of that sticky catch in the middle. I feel like an idiot for dealing with the wax and wobbly setup for so long when the fix was that simple.
