An old guy at Ace Hardware taught me the trick to squeaky stairs
I was at Ace Hardware in Medford last month trying to find a fix for these stairs that squeak every time I walk up them around 10 PM. This older guy in the paint aisle just says "stop using nails, use screws with a countersink bit and wood glue. That's it." I spent maybe 12 bucks on a countersink bit and some glue, did three stairs that night, and they've been silent for two weeks now. Has anyone else had luck with screws over nails for floor creaks?

Got the same tip from an old electrician at a bar once, except he was talking about his knees creaking too. I tried the screw and glue method on my stairs and now they're silent, but I accidentally countersunk so deep on one step I had to fill the hole with wood putty and hope nobody notices. I swear, my stairs went from sounding like a haunted house to a library in about 20 minutes. Now I just need to figure out how to stop my dog from barkin' at the mailman and I'll have complete peace.

Throw some duct tape on that wood putty spot and call it a feature. Nobody's looking that close at stairs anyway. Have you tried a spray bottle for the dog?
