Warning: My "simple" bathroom vent fan swap took 6 hours

I thought swapping out an old Broan bathroom fan for a new one would be a quick Saturday job. My house was built in the 80s in Columbus, so the ductwork was taped together with actual duct tape that had turned to goo. Took me three trips to the hardware store just to get the right size adapter because the new fan housing was a different shape. Has anyone else found that older houses never have standard sizes for anything?
