Spent $80 on a 'professional' phone screen kit before checking the obvious thing

My Pixel 6 screen went black last week, so I ordered a fancy iFixit kit with all the tools and a new display. After an hour of careful work, I plugged it in and...still black. Turns out I never checked if the brightness was just turned all the way down by accident. Has anyone else wasted money by skipping the dumbest, easiest check first?

Nah, you didn't waste that money at all! That kit is an investment for next time something actually breaks. Now you're ready. @wright.luna's garage door story is funny, but skipping the simple check is how you learn the hard way. Better to dive in and fix it yourself than pay some shop a crazy fee. You gained skills, and that's worth more than eighty bucks.

My buddy replaced his entire car stereo because the sound cut out. He bought a new head unit, speakers, the whole deal. After he finished installing it, he realized the fade was set all the way to the rear speakers. His old stereo had been working perfectly the whole time. He just sat in his driveway laughing at the waste of a Saturday.

Used to skip basic checks until I wasted a whole weekend fixing a "broken" garage door opener (the remote just needed batteries).
