TIL there's a big difference between cutterhead and plain suction dredges in mud

I spent the last 6 months running a plain suction dredge on a river job in Ohio, and it clogged up every time we hit sandier patches. Switched to a cutterhead unit last week and it chews through the same material without stopping. Has anyone else found one type way easier for mixed bottom conditions?

A friend of mine had a plain suction clog so bad they had to pull it out and dig by hand for two days.

Oh man, that sounds absolutely brutal. I had something similar happen with my own system a few years back and it was a nightmare. Like, the clog was so packed in there I ended up with mud and sludge all the way up to my elbows before I finally broke through. Honestly felt like I was digging for buried treasure but it was just a mountain of grossness. Two days of that sounds about right, you get so deep into it you start questioning all your life choices. But hey, at least you get that satisfying gush when it finally clears, right?
