Cleaned out my truck yesterday and found 47 old mud knives in a bucket
I was getting ready for a job in Boise and decided to finally sort through the mess. I pulled out knife after knife, some with handles I haven't seen for sale since the 90s. It hit me that I've been doing this for over 30 years without really keeping count. How many tools have you guys got that you just can't seem to throw away?

Honestly, that bucket is a time capsule. Each one of those knives probably has a specific texture or a weird corner it was perfect for, and your hands just remember. I bet you could grab one blindfolded and know exactly which drywall job you bought it for. Makes you wonder what else is hiding in the garage that we've forgotten how to use but can't part with. What's the oldest tool you still reach for sometimes?

Man, that's a whole career in a bucket. Alex_king is right about the hands remembering, it's like muscle memory for every weird angle and patch job. I've got a chisel my granddad gave me that's older than I am, the handle's worn smooth but it still finds its way into my bag. You don't realize how much history you're hauling around until you dump it all out on the driveway.

My version of that is a drawer full of old lifting straps (the leather ones are practically petrified). They're all frayed and smell like a gym bag from 2003, but I keep telling myself the next one is too slick and I need the old grippy ones back.
