Lost a whole ceiling panel today because my drywall lift slipped
Was hanging a 12-foot board in a basement job down off Route 9 and the lift's release lever just gave out mid-lift. Panel cracked in half when it hit the concrete floor, cost me $45 and an extra hour to cut a replacement. Has anyone else had their lift fail like that or am I just unlucky?

Oh man that sucks lol. I actually read somewhere that a lot of those drywall lifts have a known issue with the release mechanism wearing out over time. It's usually some little spring or pin that gets gunked up with drywall dust and then just gives up when you need it most. I heard a guy on another forum say he started spraying his with WD-40 every few jobs and it helps keep the lever from sticking or jamming up like that. Still a bummer about the cracked panel though, that $45 hit plus the hour of extra work is rough for a Monday.

That $45 is like the universe charging you a stupid tax for trying to be efficient on a Monday morning. I guess the real lesson here is to always bring your own bottle of WD-40 to every job site, kind of like a mechanic does for their tools. Honestly, it sounds like that lift has been holding a grudge against you for a while. Next time, maybe give it a quick prayer and a squirt before you even think about lifting a board.

Yeah @zara_hill46 is right about the WD-40, I actually had a buddy who used to put a little bit of graphite powder on the release pins of his lifts because he said the WD-40 attracted more dust over time and made things worse. He swore by it until he dropped a full sheet on his foot trying to test it out one time, which was honestly hilarious and terrible at the same time. Ever since that story, I just treat every lift like it might betray me at any second and plan for a backup board or two just in case.
