Unpopular opinion: I mixed a small batch of hot mud with a bit of dish soap for a tricky ceiling patch in a humid bathroom.

It set up way faster and smoother than I expected, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this trick for high-moisture areas.

My uncle was a drywaller for thirty years and he swore by a drop of Dawn in the mud for humid spots. The soap breaks the surface tension so it spreads easier and traps less air. Your quick set makes sense because it likely changed the water ratio. Just be careful, because adding anything can mess with the final strength and paint adhesion. I would only use that hack for small, non critical repairs.

My buddy Steve tried the soap trick in his basement bathroom and the paint peeled right off in a perfect square after six months.

Man, that peeling paint story from Harper is a real gut punch. You find a trick that seems to work great, then it fails in slow motion. Jordan's point about strength and adhesion is spot on too. It's that classic DIY dilemma where a shortcut can bite you later. Makes you second guess every little hack, even when it seems to save the day.
