Finally bit the bullet on a digital tension gauge
It was about $350 and I put it off for years thinking my old spring scale was fine. Used it today on a set of governor ropes that felt a little off, and the numbers showed one was way tighter than the others. Saved me a ton of guesswork and a possible callback. Anyone have a good trick for keeping the sensor from slipping on really worn cables?

You mentioned a possible callback, but is that really a big risk on governor ropes? I've been doing this for twenty years and a slight difference in feel is normal wear. Sometimes I think we overcomplicate simple jobs with expensive tools.

It's like people who think their old car running fine means they don't need oil changes.

So after twenty years, your hands are the official calibration tool? Mine must be the budget model because they lie to me all the time. I guess my favorite trick is just hoping the cable doesn't snap before I get paid. For real though, that gauge probably just saved you from being the guy who explains why a slightly off feel is now a very big problem.
