My mentor in Dallas told me to stop using a 10% glycolic acid peel on rosacea clients, but after 3 months of careful patch testing and short contact times, I've seen amazing results with zero flares.
Has anyone else found that some 'hard rules' in our textbooks don't always apply to every single client in your chair?

Hot take: Rules are just strong suggestions.
Longer response: Those hard rules are a starting point, not the finish line. They exist to keep people safe from the worst case scenario. But skin is way too personal for a one size fits all approach. The best tool you have is your own careful observation over time. If you do the work and track the results, you'll find your own exceptions to every rule.

My textbook said never to use physical exfoliants on acne, but a gentle konjac sponge with a mild cleanser actually calms down some of my clients. You really have to watch and learn from the skin in front of you.

Textbooks said that? Seriously? They make it sound like touching acne with anything but a chemical is a crime. My sister's skin freaks out with acids but a soft washcloth changed everything for her. Guess the real lesson is to throw the rule book out the window sometimes.
